An Island Girl Still Finding Her Way

I was born on a small tropical island in the Indian Ocean called Sri Lanka, surrounded by sunshine, coconut trees, monsoon rains, and people who never seemed to need an invitation to drop by for a cup of tea.

By the way, if you're wondering where Sri Lanka is, you'll find it on the map here. 😊 Believe it or not, over the years I've met quite a few people who have asked me where Sri Lanka is. Some have even asked if it's a city in India! For the record, Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation in the Indian Ocean, just south of India, and a place that will always be home to a piece of my heart.

Then one day, I packed my life into a few suitcases and travelled thousands of kilometres through the air to a country where winter lasts longer than I thought humanly possible.

Over the years, I have worn many hats, Architect, Interior Designer, Airbnb Superhost, entrepreneur, wife, mother, traveller, and lifelong learner. While I was building this website myself, I realized that separating my professional journey from my personal one never felt quite right. The spaces I design are shaped by the life I live, the people I meet, the places I travel, and the lessons I learn along the way.

So I have decided to bring those worlds together here.

This space will share not only design projects, hosting experiences, and professional insights, but also stories from everyday life, family, travel, nature, and the moments that have shaped who I am.

My hope is that everyone who visits will find something meaningful, whether it's a design idea, a travel story, a life lesson, or simply a reminder that we are all navigating our own journeys.

Perhaps that is why I love design so much.

Whether I am designing a home, a short-term rental, or simply walking through a forest trail, I am always searching for the same thing: connection. A connection to people, to nature, to memories, and to the feeling that we belong somewhere.

This gallery below is a collection of happy memories shared with family, friends, and loved ones over the years. Some moments are big milestones, while others are simple everyday memories that made life a little brighter. Together, they tell the story of a journey filled with love, laughter, gratitude, and the people who have made it meaningful.

As I approach half a century of life, I find myself grateful for every person I have met along the way. To those who loved me, supported me, and stood by me during difficult times, thank you. To those who hurt me, disappointed me, or taught me hard lessons, thank you too. Each of you has played a part in shaping who I am today.

I try not to carry grudges. Life is simply too short, and none of us knows how long we have in this world. So if we've crossed paths before, come say hello.

And if you happen to stumble upon my story, I'd love to hear from you. Tell me how you know me, what you appreciate about me, and yes, even what you don't. We are all works in progress, and I'm still learning, growing, and trying to become a better version of myself every day.

With Love,

Anu ( Thilani)
